Sustainable livelihoods in Schools

According to the World Health Organisation, Ugandan people are more prone to die from air pollution than their Tanzanian, Rwandan, and Kenyan counterparts. The mortality rate for air pollution in Uganda “was 155.7 for every 100,000 in 2016”. On the other hand, the country lost 64.3kha of her humid primary forest, adding up to 7.9% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period. As such, the total area of humid primary forest in Uganda decreased by 13% within this period (Global Forest Watch). 

Green Trends uses the school as a strong tool to create awareness about environmental protection in communities, and further equips the young generation with the needed skills to become agents of change. Children learn to create economic opportunities using available natural materials. The project began as a low threshold-high ceiling channel to provide income to vulnerable people in Uganda leveraging their knowledge of natural materials and ecosystems. We expanded into providing schools with an educational component to increase innovation and encourage creative thinking through project-based curriculum and product creation challenge. As material cultivation expands, it will be used as a platform for climate positive agricultural practices and environmentally conscious consumption. The project is intended to address gaps in income, education, sustainable ways of living and agriculture

We envision a society where a school becomes a center of positive change by empowering the young generation to engage actively in nature preservation and to take charge.
